MESSAGE OF THE DIRECTOR

Director's Message

The Mico Evening College was established in 1967, on the ground floor of the historic Buxton Building, as a part-time entity to offer programmes at the GCE O'level, and later at the CXC CSEC level particularly to persons in the immediate environs. Later, other programmes were added, to include in-service teacher training for pre-trained teachers of primary and all-age schools.

The high demands for programmes like these, among others, stimulated The Mico's administration during 2004 to restructure The Evening College, and it has since evolved into the School of Continuing Studies. The programme offerings widened to include certificate, diploma (including advanced professional) and degree level education in areas such as Teacher Education, Personal Development, Guidance and Counseling, School Administration / Management, Tour Guiding, Heritage Studies and Police Science. Market research is critical to programme development; hence the programmes are constantly reviewed, modified, expanded and where necessary aborted to satisfy local / national, regional and global trends. As a policy, the School of Continuing Studies partners with other institutions to share resources in the quest to provide educational opportunities for its clientele.

In 2005, one of The Mico's aged buildings (the Laundry) was renovated and converted into administrative offices and classrooms for the School of Continuing Studies . The programmes now offered are well sought after and reasonably priced with an attractive payment plan. These programmes can be accessed at The Mico's main campus as well as off-site campuses or centres. Plans are advanced to boost programme delivery through on-line mode.

I use this medium to thank those  who served in the development of the School of Continuing Studies. These include Mrs Cynthia Crooks (1974-1998), Mrs Winsome Reid (1998-2003); Dr Burnett Burton (1999-2003) and Dr Deloris Royes-Graham (2003-2007).
