Lecturer –Special Education

The incumbent will teach and carry out administrative tasks related to the management of academic affairs within the Department; develop, facilitate, evaluate and review courses and programmes; carry out research; and be of service to the institution and wider community in various areas.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Lecturer -Animation is responsible for developing and delivering theory and practical classes to students.  He/she will undertake teaching duties and the associated functions of preparation, assessment, verification, subject specific guidance together with the support to which students are entitled from their lecturers carrying out their stewardship roles.

Lecturer in Mathematics

The Mathematics specialist works with administrators, lecturers, special educators and instructional and support services staff to implement quality mathematics instruction for students who need mathematics support within and beyond the classroom. 

He/she is also responsible for delivering a mathematics programme designed to meet students’ needs and providing staff development or additional support services based on the needs of the campus and providing service aimed at enhancing the efficient administration of the University College by conducting courses in the fields of mathematics and statistics. 

To quality candidates should possess:

Ø  Knowledge of how to set and communicate clear vision and expectations for a Department/Faculty, School or Centre.

Ø  Knowledge of the University College’s strategic aims and objectives

Providing leadership within the department in a particular field and ensure that courses in the field are taught and examined within the University College and the University Council of Jamaica’s (UCJ’s) Quality Assurance framework.

This position is responsible for:

Ø Assisting students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development. 

Ø Assisting with all aspects of the University College’s search and admissions process and for educating prospective students on the university college’s admissions process, trends, procedures and testing. 

Ø  Administering course assessments and provide written evaluative and formative feedback on students’ work in a timely manner.

Ø Report to and maintain positive relationships with subject coordinators.

Ø Providing support and consultancy to students on practicum and course work matters

Ø Developing and maintaining active research and high level of professional activities

 

To qualify candidates should possess:

Ø  A  Master’s or Doctoral degree in Guidance, Education and/or University Counselling or equivalent

ADMINISTRATION

 

Human Resource Officer

The Human Resource Officer should be able to develop effective relationships with line managers and provide a professional Human Resource service to the institution.

Responsibilities include:

·         Reporting and managing human resources metrics – produce reports on key metrics, including remuneration and benefits, absenteeism and turnover.

·         Preparing Contracts for assigned staff in keeping with the University College’s policies and procedures.

·         Recruitment and selection – Assist with the recruitment, selection and interviewing process.

·         Preparing routine correspondence relating to staffing issues demonstrating a thorough knowledge of established GoJ policies and guidelines.

·         Develop, implement and maintain human resources policies across the institution, including training programs to educate and promote awareness of regulatory compliance.

·         Entering and maintaining data elements on defined database for assigned category of staff.

To qualify candidates should possess:

·         Tertiary level qualification in Human Resource Management or Business Management and extensive knowledge of and experience within an HR environment.

·         Superior interpersonal, communication, and consultative skills at all levels.

Secretary

This position is responsible for performing secretarial duties through the effective coordination of the flow of information and correspondence between the assigned office and other members of staff, the efficient organization of records within the office and the handling of other administrative tasks.  The incumbent is also responsible for preparing correspondence through the application of a thorough knowledge of the University College’s Policies, Practices and Procedures.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ø  Preparing correspondence not requiring a drafted reply and generating letters from general instructions.

Ø  Ensuring proper handling and safeguarding of confidential and sensitive information.

Ø  Analysing telephone and in-person enquiries using good judgment and discretion.

Ø  Reviewing correspondence, memoranda and reports prepared for accuracy.

Ø  Processing correspondence and following-up to ensure that all matters are finalized.

Ø  Managing an appointment calendar, schedules and coordinates appointments and meetings.

Ø  Notifying persons of meetings, preparing meeting agenda, reproducing minutes and circulating them to the relevant persons.

Ø  Ensuring that an efficient system of logging the movement of correspondence within the department is in place and records and files are up to date and accurately maintained.

Laboratory Assistant

The Laboratory Assistant working in the Faculty of Science will provide support to Lecturers in the faculty. His/her tasks involve supporting the work of science teachers/lecturers and their students to ensure that they make the best use of the time they spend in the laboratory; use equipment safely and accurately to record the results of work being undertaken.

The incumbent will provide technical support, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and is ready for use and that the right materials are available for particular lessons. He /she will work closely with students to explain or demonstrate experiments on how to use equipment as well as helping Lecturers with a class and supporting individual students on research projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ø  Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans.

Ø  Preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes.

Ø  Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus.

Ø  Keeping records of students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc;

Ø  Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that chemicals, drugs and other materials are appropriately stored.

Ø  Working with individual students and supporting them on research projects

Ø  Managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

Ø  A Bachelors Degree that has a technical, IT or scientific element.

Ø  A minimum of a Laboratory Technology Certificate/Diploma

Ø  Experience in providing demonstrations and writing technical reports;

Ø  Strong practical and organizational skills.

Ø  A good scientific and technical background with strong IT skills.

Ø  The ability to learn specific, practical techniques and apply this knowledge to solve technical problems;

Ø  Good hand and eye coordination and the ability to use technical equipment with accuracy;

Clerk

The Clerk will be responsible for the maintenance of students’ records, the accurate preparation of transcripts and the timely response to transcripts requests. 

The incumbent will be required to assist with the development and implementation of quality assurance systems within the section and ensure a consistently high quality and proactive support for the administrative activities.    

 

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

 

Ø  At least a Diploma in Administration or related field

Ø  Be computer literate and be familiar with the Microsoft suite of programmes

Ø  Be competent in database management. 

Ø  Have at least 2 years experience in an administrative and/or supervisory position.

ANCILLARY

 

Driver

The bus driver has responsibility for transporting individuals from one location to another.  He/she is expected to keep to the assigned duties given, obeying traffic laws and assisting university clients with disabilities or where requested. He/she will be responsible for basic maintenance, including checking the vehicle’s oil, tires and lights, in addition to keeping the bus clean.

Responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:

Ø  Transporting staff and students from one location to another as assigned.

Ø  Ensuring that the bus is bedded safely and it is kept clean.

Ø  Ensuring that safety regulations are adhered to.

Ø   Responding to concerns and problems to ensure that they are satisfactorily dealt with in a timely manner.

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

 

Ø  A commercial driver’s licence.

Housekeeper/Houseman

The Housekeeper/Houseman will be responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary and tidy environment as a daily routine, ensuring the comfort and health of all staff, students and visitors on the campus.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ø  Maintaining all assigned areas in a clean and sanitary condition.

Ø   Sweeping, wiping, dusting and polishing (where applicable) all assigned areas.

Ø   Clean mirrors and windows

Ø  Dusting and cleaning furniture and equipment.

Ø  Sweeping and wiping stairways, passages, wash rooms and corridors that are assigned.

Ø  Washing and cleaning sink, tubs, toilets, shower stalls/baths and shower curtains.

 

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

Ø  Certificate in Housekeeping would be an asset (HEART Trust)

Ø  The ability to read and write

Ø  Training in Customer Service

Ø  A minimum of three (3) years experience in a similar position

Cook

The Cook performs assigned food preparation duties. He/she is responsible for preparing, seasoning and cooking meals, preparing salads and desserts or other foods in the Cafeteria.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Ø  Preparing dishes/ meals in accordance with menus or the instruction of the Management Team.

Ø   Ensuring that the execution of all meals prepared, meet the expectation of the College and the Public Health standard.

Ø  Ensuring that dishes are appropriately garnished/ decorated before presentation.

Ø  Preparing and cooking food for special guests or functions.

Ø  Inspecting equipment, utensils and work areas to ensure conformance to established standards.

Ø  Ensuring that sanitation practices are followed and that a safe and clean work area is maintained at all times.

 

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

 

Ø  High School Diploma/A Certificate from an accredited college, technical or vocational school for completion of a course in professional cooking, food service/dietary management, culinary arts or a closely related area.

Ø  Training in Customer Service

Gardener

The gardener will be responsible for maintaining the external surroundings on the campus and for removing trash, sweeping the grounds, mowing/trimming the lawns and tending to the gardens.

To qualify for this position, candidates should possess:

Ø  Knowledge of Grounds Maintenance

Ø  The ability to read and write

Ø  Training in Customer Service

Ø  A minimum of three (3) years experience in a similar position
