B.Ed. Language and Literacy
Programme Outline

Literacy encompasses a wide range of skills that allow learners to meet the demands of school at various levels. One of the primary responsibilities of all teachers is to aid in the language and literacy development of children. Children's future and consequently the future of any society depends heavily on the depth of language and literacy development promoted by the society and practised within the school. Additionally, teachers of Literacy must be concerned about the rate of illiteracy among adults, and teacher candidates ought to be prepared to teach this population. The teaching and learning of Language Arts and Literacy cannot be seen as anything less than life-long processes.

The major goal of the Degree programme is to expose teachers to the critical areas of language and literacy and to equip them with the skills and techniques that will enable them to diagnose and remediate the challenges in language and literacy that children face. The Degree programme includes both specialised and core courses that are designed to develop in the teachers not only their competence, but also the confidence to succour those whom they seek to teach in the content areas, with a view to enhancing their language and literacy acquisition.

Aims
  1. To strengthen the content base of teachers at the Primary and Secondary level in the area of Language Arts;
  2. To encourage the practice of scholarship and research in areas of Literacy, Language and Literature;
  3. To better prepare teachers for the demands of upper school and the attendant regional/international examinations;
  4. To improve pedagogical and andragogical strategies through technology and collaboration;
  5. To identify and treat "problem" areas such as the teaching of poetry, literacy, and the fundamental areas of Standard English;
  6. 5To strengthen the professional, social, moral and spiritual development of the learners.
The DLLL is designed to meet the needs of two sets of students:
  1. the full-time students, who enter with two CAPE Unit 1 subjects and with five CSEC subjects (with at least a grade 2 in English A and English B) for the 4-year programme;
  2. the full-time or part-time students, who are practising teachers and holders of a diploma in teaching, or holders of an Associate's degree.

The Programme includes practical components which provide students with opportunities to demonstrate an understanding of concepts learned in a real-life situation.

The academic year for the two-year degree programme consists of two semesters. Each semester includes a minimum of 15 weeks of instruction. There is an additional summer session usually beginning the third week of May, during which classes meet three hours weekly for weeks 1 – 7, and six hours weekly for weeks 8 -11.
Courses usually offer 3 credits for one semester hour of credit for fifteen hours of work. Read More
